With society’s ever-shrinking attention span, marketers are always looking for ways to stand out from the chatter. One great way to do so is the use of infographics, which are visual representations of data. Infographics offer an easy-to-digest format for portraying large amounts of data that normally would be very text heavy. They are also visually appealing and easily sharable, thus driving website traffic and improving search engine optimization.
To get the most out of infographic marketing, we’ve created the following list of best practices for creating a visually appealing infographic with a compelling message that encourages sharing:
1. Align the infographic with your overall content strategy.
Choose a topic that will bring you relevant traffic and spark conversation among prospects. For example, if your product is B2B software but you focus your infographic on the latest smartphone statistics, you probably won’t attract a large amount of relevant traffic to your website. In this case an infographic portraying findings from a user study might be a better fit.
2. Compile your data.
Once you have decided on your infographic topic, it is time to find relevant data. Utilize a variety of credible sources and be sure to include them at the bottom of your infographic.
3. Design.
After you have compiled all of the data that you need, you can begin to design your infographic. Keep in mind that people will share your infographic more if it is unique or very visually appealing. Also, pay close attention to the top part of your design as most websites will show a cropped version of the infographic and link to the full image (see below for examples).
4. Develop a plan for marketing your infographic.
Don’t expect to attract a large audience simply by publishing the infographic on your website. How will you drive traffic to it? You can include it in relevant blog posts on your site or through guest posts on industry blogs, send it in an email blast, or submit it to infographic aggregators such as visual.ly.
5. Send it out.
After you have published your infographic you should utilize the marketing activities that you planned in step four, whether it be including the infographic in an email blast or reaching out to influential industry bloggers for help promoting it.
6. Track performance.
In order to fully understand the impact of your infographic it is important to track the amount of amplification it receives. By hosting the image on your website you can utilize analytics tools to track the amount of traffic coming to that specific page. Additionally, link metrics services such as bit.ly make it possible to track the spread of your infographic.
