According to MarketingProfs, 2011 was the Year of Content Marketing and 2012 will be the Year of Specialization within Content Marketing. More and more purchasing decisions are being initiated, researched, and executed online. A content marketing strategy ensures that you are reaching these consumers and are playing a key role in their decision making process.
As useful as content marketing is, doing it effectively is by no means easy. A recent MarketingSherpa study ranked content marketing as the most effective, but also the most difficult to execute SEO tactic. Here are six tips to ensure that your content marketing strategy is successful.
- Be Prepared
Develop an editorial calendar outlining your overall content strategy, the pieces of content that fit inside that strategy, and the team members who will be responsible. - Be Relevant
Who do you want to reach? What are they looking for? As more companies are publishing their own content, consumers’ expectations of content will continue to increase. - Be Precise
Don’t be too wordy. Attention spans are falling close to only 140 characters long, so if you can say something in a paragraph, don’t write a novel. - Be Interesting
No one wants to read a long, boring description of what your product does; they can find that on other places on your website (hopefully). Try telling a story, and don’t be afraid to be funny. - Be Authentic
Consumers are smarter than you think. They know when they’re being sold to. Creating blog posts full of industry buzz words for SEO purposes is no longer an effective solution for reaching consumers. - Be Interactive
Vary the type of content you produce, and include videos and photos whenever possible to encourage consumers to interact with your message. Think about ways to engage and create a conversation with them.
